The Bristol School District is located within the scenic village of Bristol in southeastern Wisconsin. This one building school district serves approximately 830 students in Pre-K through eighth grade.
The Challenge
The Bristol School District had outgrown their ad hoc security camera system. And the community passed a referendum to remodel the school building, including upgrading the security system. A more complete and interconnected school security solution that conducted surveillance over the entire school property, was needed.
Elevity submitted a proposal featuring an advanced cloud-managed security solution that stood out from the competition. The solution included an interconnected system featuring video cameras with intercoms, motion sensing technology, door access control capabilities and software to quickly search the collected data. Contract options for 5-years and 10-years were offered. The District chose to sign a 10-year agreement for a significant cost savings.
But an incident at the school was a true test of this technology, when a child went missing following an after-school event and the police were called to help locate her.
The Solution
The police asked Tony Green, the District’s Network Administrator, to review the data from the school’s security cameras. A photo from our Student Information System (SIS) was uploaded to the database and facial recognition analytics were used to analyze the video. This showed that the child had left the building and gotten into a car. The security system’s License Plate Recognition feature was then used to get a better look at the car’s plate number.
It took only eight minutes from search request to video being texted to the police showing the vehicle’s plate number. In a missing child case – minutes, even seconds, count.
The Results
The missing child was found. A happy ending for everyone! Both Tony and the police were impressed with how quickly the software sorted through the video footage.
While the District’s staff hope that an emergency such as this will not happen again, they are reassured in knowing that they have the technology in place, just in case. For this type of scenario or any other challenge poised by a bad actor or an environmental threat.
